Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Puma Concludes Delegation to Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, October 29, 2018 – Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central Asian Affairs Emilia A. Puma led the U.S. delegation to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on October 25–26 for the fifth U.S-Turkmenistan Annual Bilateral Consultations.

The Annual Bilateral Consultations with Turkmenistan, last held in Washington, D.C. in 2015, are a regular mechanism to discuss the full range of issues in the U.S.-Turkmenistan relationship and to strengthen collaboration between our two nations. While in Ashgabat, Ms. Puma also held meetings with senior Government of Turkmenistan officials.

During her meetings with Turkmen officials, Ms. Puma stated, “We believe that the Annual Bilateral Consultations are a cornerstone of the U.S.-Turkmenistan relationship. Working together in partnership, our two countries will be able to build deeper and broader relationships, to the benefit of our two great peoples.”

The consultations focused on all aspects of U.S.-Turkmenistan cooperation and engagement, including security issues, economic and trade relations, and the bilateral political relationship. The delegations likewise discussed cooperation in the humanitarian sphere to include our social, educational, and cultural ties, as well as human rights issues.
