The quality of medical care in Turkmenistan is significantly below Western standards. There are often shortages of basic medical supplies, including disposable needles, anesthetics, and antibiotics. The Embassy does not recommend undergoing any invasive procedures in Turkmenistan. Elderly travelers and those with pre-existing health problems may be at particular risk due to inadequate medical facilities. For major illness or injuries, standard practice is to get emergency treatment at local facilities and to arrange for medical evacuation as soon as possible.
Pharmacies are found throughout Turkmenistan, but many available medications are ineffective. Travelers are advised to bring their own medical supplies and an ample supply of medications for any chronic illness, minor illnesses, and injuries. Travelers with pre-existing medical conditions should carry a letter from your attending physician which provides details about your medical problems. The letter should also include the generic name for any prescribed medications.
Information about vaccinations and other health precautions such as safe food and water safety and insect bite protection may be obtained on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website and prevention hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747).
Adequate medical evacuation insurance coverage for all travelers is a high priority. In the event of a serious medical condition every effort should be made to evacuate to Istanbul, Dubai, or Western Europe. Please be advised that the cost of a medical evacuation to Istanbul, Dubai, or Western Europe can easily exceed 70,000 USD and may take up to 24 hours to arrange.
Ambulance Services
Government Ambulance Service
Telephone: 03 (Turkmenistan’s version of 911, but for medical emergencies only)
Generally, ambulances in Turkmenistan are not equipped with emergency medical supplies like medications or oxygen. The ambulance will answer an emergency call then recommend triage and transport to the appropriate specialty hospital. The dispatch operators do not speak English, generally Russian or Turkmen. The wait time for an ambulance can be 30-60 minutes in Ashgabat depending on availability and frequent road closures but would likely be significantly longer in more remote areas. The ambulance staff does not speak English, generally ONLY Russian and Turkmen.
