U.S. Embassy Organizes First-Ever National Spelling Bee at the State Library of Turkmenistan

On October 30, 2022, the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat, in cooperation with the Ministries of Education, Foreign Affairs, and Culture of Turkmenistan, organized the first-ever national spelling bee as a part of the Central Asian Spelling Bee. The competition took place at the State Library of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan. About 80 talented spellers from 18 higher education institutions displayed their skills in English language, composure, and public speaking. Two of the four winners of the national tournament were from the Magtymguly State University, and the other two are from Myrat Garryev Turkmen State Medical University and Dovletmamed Azady Turkmen National Institute of World Languages. The winners of the national bee are invited to participate in the Regional Central Asian Spelling Bee, which will be held in Tashkent later this year.

Spelling bees are a uniquely American tradition as Ambassador Klimow underlined in his opening remarks: “Spelling Bees engage thousands of students across the world – including Turkmenistan! I applaud you for your participation: Spelling bees are a great way for you to test you English, build self-confidence, and practice public speaking.” The winning words for the bee were “anomaly,” “lachrymose,” and “abrasive.”
