The United States Shares Expertise, Promotes Cultural Exchange through Music Program

Three American music teachers, Mr. Ira Spaulding, Mr. Derek Beckvold, and Mr. Avery Waite, will visit Ashgabat December 14 – 18, 2015 for a professional and cultural exchange program. The teachers will conduct workshops for students and teachers at Turkmenistan’s National Conservatory, including the classical music, vocals, composition, and conducting departments. The teachers will also lead a jam session and a music presentation at the Embassy’s Information Resource Center in Ashgabat. A joint concert with the National Conservatory in Magtymguly Theater will mark the culmination of this program.

Ira Spaulding, a choral conductor, singer, and teacher has enjoyed a career spanning more than 30 years performing concerts and recitals in more than 60 countries, giving master classes and choral workshops in order to share his love of music with others. Derek Beckvold is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has performed a wide range of music all over the world. He has taught in Boston, Kabul, Colombo, and New Delhi. Juilliard-trained cellist Avery Waite is an active performer, teacher, composer, conductor, and arts advocate.

The group will hold public events according to the following schedule:

  • Tuesday, December 15 at 18:00 – Jazz Jam Session at the Information Resource Center
  • Thursday, December 17 at 18:00 – Music Presentation at the Information Resource Center
  • Friday, December 18 at 19:00 – Closing Concert with the National Conservatory at Magtymguly Theater
